Normalise Informed Conversations.

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter – Martin Luther King

Why is it important to have an informed conversation about death and dying? We could also ask why is it important to educate ourselves about all the important aspects of life so we can have these informed conversations?

Because as a well-informed person, you can make far better choices and you are more likely to achieve the best possible outcome. Talking about death within a family, or with friends, can have amazing effects! It’s a very healthy thing to do, it normalises death as a part of life, it can be the start of educating yourself about death and dying, removing the myths, reducing the fear. It empowers people to take charge of their own end of life and death.

Talking with the people who matter in your life about really important issues adds to the richness of your life and can open up new levels of communication which you never thought possible.

One of the biggest gifts you can give to the people you care about is having your end of life plans, including a plan for how you’d like your funeral to be, written down and shared with them. Once this knowledge is shared, there’s no uncertainty and when you come to the end of your life, the people who are left behind can deal with their grief and it isn’t made worse by confusion, stress and guilt over what you might have wanted.

It doesn’t have to be complicated, firstly, have an up to date Will. If you’ve had a life-limiting diagnosis or you are getting on in years, it’s a great idea to have an Advance Care Directive in place, and Enduring Power of Attorney, and to appoint an Enduring Guardian.
